Governor Kulongoski's Environmental Principles and Priorities

A stable and sustainable economy is a foundation for a strong and prosperous future. As Governor, I want to provide all Oregonians with a quality education that gives them the chance to earn a living-wage job and provide for their families.

Protecting our environment and our natural resources is another way we can work together to promote a sustainable economy. When we have a natural environment that is healthy and sustainable, we all win.

We can work simultaneously to both grow our economy and protect our environment.

Ensuring "livability" for us not only today - but tomorrow as well - is a guiding principle for a strong future. We must make sure Oregon has a healthy balance between growth, infrastructure, development and environmental protection.
Ocean Health Agreement Nears Completion
Action Plan to be Released in 2008
On September 18, 2006, the states of California, Oregon and Washington launched the West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health, a collaboration to address critical ocean and coastal protection and management issues. Public comments on the draft Action Plan for the ocean health agreement are being considered by the three states. The final Action Plan will be released in mid-2008.

Headwaters to Ocean (H2O)
The Governor's Strategy for Meeting Oregon's Water Needs
Oregon's waters are an integral part of sustainable communities, a viable state economy and a healthy environment - and they are fundamental to our quality of life. Oregonians recognize the need to manage our waters in a way that protects the unique natural resources of the state in balance with a wide variety of beneficial uses. However, demands for water continue to grow, and we face additional challenges to managing Oregon's water resources from pressures associated with climate change and rapid population growth. Headwaters to Ocean (H2O) is the Governor's strategy to achieve sustainable water supplies and quality to benefit Oregon's people, communities, environment and ecosystems, and fish and wildlife.
